HOSPICE CARE

Hospice provides health services and support for patients and their loved ones when curing a disease is not a reality. It is a special kind of care that supports the whole person – mentally, spiritually, emotionally and physically. Hospice treats the person, not the disease; focuses on the patient, as well as his/her family; and emphasizes the quality of life, not the duration.
An individual plan of hospice care is developed for each patient and family. Directed by the patient’s physician, medical care is aimed at relieving the patient’s pain and other symptoms. The hospice nurse provides regular reports to the physician and coordinates other social, emotional and spiritual services, often involving pastoral and bereavement coordinators, home care aides, therapists, social workers and volunteers.

Paula and Jimmy Paradise

Since Paula Paradise and her husband, Jimmy, first sought the assistance of Home & Community Health Services’ Hospice Program, Paula has become a major advocate of this service. “A lot of people think that hospice is all about death and dying,” she comments, “but to me, it’s really about love.”

H&CHS’ Hospice Team vastly improved the quality of life for both Paula and Jimmy. “It may sound strange, but we had a lot of fun with them,” she says. “They put us so much more at ease.”

Paula feels the support and care provided to her was as beneficial as that which was provided to Jimmy prior to his passing. “These people helped me find myself. They were a great support system.”
